Idag på åttonde mars så samlades 150-200 personer i Lund för den årliga utomparlamentariska demonstrationen. En aggressiv polisinsats som vi aldrig tidigare sett på liknande demonstrationer försökte, men misslyckades med att trakassera och störa demonstrationen.
En ovanligt stor mängd poliser (som dock var färre än tio fortfarande) dök upp bakom, vid sidan av och framför demonstrationen. Kort efter att demonstrationen lämnat Stortorget så började poliser trakassera demonstrationen. De stoppade den på Kyrkogatan och hävdade att demonstrationen "blockerade trafiken." Polisen var alltså då de som blockerade trafiken här, och snart bildades en stor kö av bussar och bilar bakom demonstrationen. Senare, vid Bangatan, så försökte de knuffa oss åt sidan för att "låta bussar passera", men det fanns inte en buss i närheten. Demonstrationen höll ihop och sa till polisen att hålla sig borta och fortsatte fram, men stoppades flera gånger till då polisen hotade att arrestera deltagare, de hävdade att det rådde maskeringsförbud och att vi återigen blockerade trafiken. De blockerade demonstrationen från att gå in på Lilla Fiskaregatan, en gågata, vilket tvingade demon att gå in på Klostergatan där den - och polisen - mycket väl blockerade gatan på grund av polisens handlande.
Demonstrationen kom därefter ut på Kyrkogatan igen och bestämde sig för att faktiskt blockerade den, för att visa snutar att de inte kan trakassera demonstrationer i Lund. I denna situation så försökte polisen arrestera människor, dra ner maskeringar, knuffa människor och hota deltagare men misslyckades med sitt försök att kontrollera demonstrationen. De drog också ner en journalist på marken, tog stryptag på en demonstrant, våldsamt knuffade flera människor och försökte göra minst ett gripande. Denna mängd våld, helt koordinerat, kan inte legitimeras med att låta trafiken gå en söndag, och måste istället förstås som en politisk provokation mot vår framgångsrika organisering och demonstration.
Det vi såg idag var nytt. Dessa demonstrationer har gått smidigt under flera år då polisen har hållit sig undan och trafikstörningar har hållts nere. Polisen har också idag försökt hävda att vi var i en illegal demonstration, något som inte är fallet. Grundlagen ger oss rätten att demonstrera, och högsta domstolen har tydligt yttrat att demonstrationsrätten är starkare än några ordningsfrågor.
På ett annat sätt så är det vi såg typiskt. Polisen är en patriarkal institution, det är en del av det ruttna samhälle vi lever i. Poliser är massivt överrepresenterade i fall av våld i hemmet och i röstande för auktoritära och rastistiska partier. Poliser lägger sällan om någonsin vikt vid våltäkter. Dessa saker är knutna till polisen som struktur. Idag har vi försvarat vår legala och politiska rätt att demonstrera. Vi försvarade våra kamrater mot en inkompetent och kontraproduktiv poliskommendering på ett framgångsrikt sätt och höll ihop. Och vi gjorde en kraftfull demonstration mot patriarkatet och för feministiska kamper världen över.
I slutändan så lät vi inte polisen stoppa oss. Istället så återvände vi till Stortorget och höll våra sista tal och den feministiska performancen "Un violador en tu camino" och avslutade peppigt. Arrangörerna vill tacka alla som deltog! Kampen fortsätter!
Statement on Police Action at 8th of March in Lund
Today on the 8th of March 150-200 people gathered in Lund for the annual extraparliamentary demonstration. An aggressive police response, unprecedented at demonstrations like this before, attempted, but failed to harass and disrupt the demonstration.
An unusually large number of police (which still numbered fewer than ten) showed up behind, beside and in front of the demonstration. Shortly after the demonstration left Stortorget cops began to harass the demonstration. They stopped the demonstration on Kyrkogatan, and claimed that it was "blocking the traffic". The police were thus the ones blocking the traffic, and a large build-up of cars and buses was soon created. Later, at Bangatan, they tried to push us aside "to let the busses pass", but there wasn't a bus to be seen for hundreds of metres. The demonstration kept together and told the police to stay away and continued onwards, but was stopped several more times as police threatened to arrest participants, claimed that masking was illegal and that we were once more blocking traffic. They blocked the demonstration from entering Lilla Fiskaregatan, a pedestrian street, and instead forced it to continue on Klostergatan where it - and the police - indeed blocked the street due to the police's action.
The demonstration passed out onto Kyrkogatan which it decided to actually block, to show cops that they cannot at will harass protests in Lund. In this situation police attempted to arrest people, pull down masks, pushed people and threaten participants but failed to accomplish their task of trying to control the demo. They also dragged a journalist to the ground, put a stranglehold on a demonstrator, violently pushed several people and tried to grab one person at least. This amount of violence, thoroughly coordinated, cannot be legitimiced with trying to let the traffic on a sunday to pass, and must be understood as a political provocation against our strong organising/demonstration.
What we saw today was unprecedented. These demonstrations have run smoothly for years with police staying away and disruptions to traffic have been kept low. Police also attempted to claim that we were in an illegal demonstration, something which was not the case. The constitution gives us the right to demonstrate, and the supreme court has clearly ruled that the right to demonstration is stronger than considerations for the public order.
In another sense what we saw is typical. Police are a patriarchal institution, a part of maintaining this rotten society we are in. Police officers are massively overrepresented in cases of domestic abuse and in voting for authoritarian, racist parties. Police rarely if ever give creedence to rape cases. These things are connected to the system of policing itself. Today we defended our legal and political right to demonstrate. We defended our comrades against an incompetent and counterproductive police action succesfully and the demonstration kept together. And we successfully made a powerful demonstration against patriarchy, and for feminist struggles around the world.
In the end we did not let the cops stop us. Instead we returned to Stortorget and held our final speeches as well as the "Un violador en tu camino" performance successfully, thus ending on a high note. The organisers would like to thank everyone who participated! The struggle continues!
