#Lesvos: “Wherever books are burned, human beings are destined to be burned too.”

Lesvos. Greece. Solidarity statement by Lesvos Solidarity – Mosaik Support Center, after the arson attack against One Happy Family on Lesvos.

A hundred years before the advent of Hitler, the German-Jewish poet, Heinrich Heine, had declared: “Wherever books are burned, human beings are destined to be burned too.” Fighting back the fire of hate starts by fighting ignorance with education. In a place like Lesvos where people from so many different places and with such different needs meet and interact, educational spaces are the ground for a daily life in which these interactions can grow in a healthy way.

We are in a huge need of spaces to learn about the relationship between ourselves and “the other” and how our differences might have the potential of enriching our life instead of fearing them. To learn how to speak a local language and being able to communicate with locals, show our feelings, express our opinion and being heard. To learn that life is a school in which we can only graduate from it together.

The destruction of the School of Peace or any educational space where these values are taught it’s a lost for all of us. The quote from Heine tells us how much necessary is to protect our cultural heritage because we are the living history in which that culture, or the lack of it, it’s shown.

From Mosaik Support Center we express all our support to the International School of Peace and the people of One Happy Family – Community Center, Lesvos (Warning Facebook Link). We have the great responsibility of educating for peace, tolerance and justice, and we will keep doing it without fear, together.
