What started in mid-October as a high-school student campaign of mass fare-evasion, soon developed into a nation-wide rebellion, involving mass-looting, and daily clashes with security forces. The government initially responded to the unrest by declaring a state of emergency, instituting a curfew and putting soldiers in the streets to quell the uprising.
