Freedom for the prisoners in Budapest! Standing together internationally against the new wave of repression

Every year in February, an international Nazi meeting takes place in Budapest, the so-called "Day of Honor". For years, Hungarian and international anti-fascists have been taking action against this Nazi glorification.

In February 2023 there were arrests and calls for wanted persons against antifascists in Budapest, who are accused of attacks on Nazis. Two antifascists from Germany and Italy have been in jail since then. Others are being searched for internationally.

We call out for solidarity with the antifascists who took to the streets against the trivialization of Nazi glorification and the Europe-wide networking of neo-Nazis on the "Day of Honor".

Anti-fascist resistance remains important! Antifascism is not criminal! Therefore we demand freedom for the imprisoned antifascists! We demand the withdrawal of the arrest warrants and wanted persons!

Freedom for the antifascist prisoners in Budapest! Standing together internationally against the new wave of repression against antifascists.

Every year in February an international Nazi meeting takes place in Budapest, the so-called "Day of Honor." The spectacle, including a day of walking in Wehrmacht uniforms, is intended to commemorate the so-called "breakout" - German and Hungarian fascists tried to break out of the encirclement of Buda in 11. February 1945 to escape the encirclement of Budapest by the Red Army. What is here considered a historical "commemoration", including re-enactment as a program for the entire family, has become an important networking meeting of the neo-fascist scene in Europe, with often several thousand participants. The "Day of Honor" is accompanied by right-wing rock concerts, sale of Nazi memorabilia and attacks by fascists.

For years, Hungarian and international anti-fascists have been taking action against this glorification of the Nazis. The protests have made it more difficult for the right-wing Hungarian government to continue to tolerate the "Day of Honor" as it has in recent decades. As part of the counter-activities to the fascist march, several comrades from Hungary, Germany and Italy were arrested. Two of them are currently still in custody, another person is on conditional release. Arrest warrants have been issued for other comrades, some of whom are being publicly sought. In the aftermath, German authorities have carried out house searches throughout Germany in order to exert further pressure on anti-fascists. The authorities also accuse other people of participating in attacks on Nazis in Budapest. The German police, especially the LKA Saxony, did not miss the opportunity to start repressive measures against our comrades even before an official request for assistance from Hungary and shortly after the arrests in Hungary, and probably opened their own investigation.

The video of an attack on a Nazi was taken as an opportunity to unleash an unprecedented media hystiria in Hungary, directed against anti-fascists and leftists in general. The BILD newspaper published the names of the prisoners and other suspects. Numerous fascist groups and media close to Orban took part in outings of anti-fascists. Hungarian media and politics used the event for a debate on banning anti-fascist organizations.

We have to be prepared that the wave of repression of the German and Hungarian authorities against those affected and their environment will continue in the coming months with new trials, pre-trial detention and other measures. This renewed wave of repression is in the tradition of the Antifa East trial and the right-wing agenda of Saxony's repressive authorities to suppress antifascists. The formation of a special commission of over forty people in Budapest, the house searches in Berlin, Leipzig and Jena, the arrest warrants and public searches are probably only the beginning of a larger wave of repression.

Do not participate in speculations about deeds, alleged participants and connections! Donate money, spread this appeal and inform yourself and others about the trial!

Soha többé fasizmust! Nie wieder Faschismus!
